从《红楼梦》的英译本看杨、霍的翻译策略

Translation Strategies as Seen from the Two English Versions of Honglou Meng by the Yangs and Hawkes
Abstract

Approaches to cultures involved in translation may be divided into two types: SL culture oriented foreignization and TL culture oriented domestication. Through a comparative study of cultural information translation of the classical Chinese novel, A Dream of Red Mansions, this thesis analyses the use of these two translation methods and the different effects they make on the TL culture and the TL readers, based on the two versions by Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes respectively. The author concludes that the strategy of foreignization works better for effectively preserving and dissimilating the source language cultural peculiarity and heritage to the target reader.

摘  要

翻译实质是不同文化间的交流。翻译中对文化因素的处理1般分为主要以源语文化为归宿的'“异化”和主要以目的语文化为归宿的“归化”。本文通过对中国古典名著《红楼梦》两个英译本的比较,分析评述了杨宪益和霍克斯两位译者在传递不同背景的文化信息方面所采取的归化或异化的翻译策略和方法，以及由此对读者所产生的效果和在目的语文化中所起的作用的不同。本文认为异化策略在保存源语文化特色和传播源语文化遗产方面显得更为有效。
