“Deviation” in Source Language and “Smoothness” in Target Language
Abstract

Embracing the view that literary writers’ special manipulation of language not only endows literary texts with literariness but also makes it an indispensable factor in comprehension and interpretation of literary texts, this thesis attempts to approach deviations in literary and stylistic dimensions instead of formal dimension, and tries to examine their relationship with smoothness of translation in target language. Setting out from Leech’s classification of deviations and various examples of deviations in literary texts, it points out the underlying causes of deviations from stylistic point of view and from the aspect of authors, which gives certain clues to their translation. As to Yan Fu’s theory on smoothness, the relationship between this criterion and the translation of literary deviations is examined. Based on the above discussions, it is concluded that in order to achieve functional and perceptional equivalence (generalized from Tytler’s and Nida’s theory) in translating literary deviations, superficial smoothness in translation may not be the best option, and therefore a review of smoothness is required. Finally a suggested approach in translating deviations is proposed.

摘 要

文学作家对语言独特的控制力不仅赋予文学作品以文学性,也使其成为理解、诠释文学作品不可或缺的部分。基于此观点,本文试图从文学,文体学的角度而并非从语言形式的角度来探讨语言变异现象及此类变异在翻译译文中与通顺标准的关系。文章首先从利奇对变异的分类及各类文学作品中变异的实例出发,基于文体风格的角度及作者的角度,概括出了变异表象下的深层原因。以此为线索,从严复的通顺标准理论谈及到翻译变异与通顺的关系。基于上述讨论提出在翻译文学语言变异时,为了达到功能与理解的对等(此来源于泰勒与奈达的翻译理论)表面看来通顺的翻译并非是最佳的翻译,有时对通顺的反思是必要的。最后对翻译文学变异提出了1条建议性的方法。
