The initiation theme of Invisible Man
Abstract
Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man is an initiation story. The novel is about a story in which a black young man struggles in the society until he discovers his invisibility since people around refuse him. This thesis attempts to explore the initiation theme and to reveal the process of the protagonist from innocence to maturity. The first part is about the protagonist’s confusion, in which the protagonist expresses his confusion of self and the blacks’ social status. The second part is his initiation under the mentors. The positive mentors include his grandfather, the vet and Mary Rambo, and the negative mentor: Dr. Bledsoe. With the help and advice the mentors give, the protagonist gets some new knowledge. Through his experience, he becomes more and more mature. The third part is epiphany. Through the epiphany he gets in the hospital and from Tod’s death, he realizes that he is invisible in the white-dominated society. The conclusion shows that the protagonist succeeds in growing up from innocence to maturity.

摘 要
拉尔夫•埃里森的《看不见的人》是1部典型的成长小说。它讲述了1个黑人青年不断奋斗并4处碰壁的故事。这篇论文试图分3个部分来探讨它的成长主题并揭示主人公从无知到成熟的成长过程。第1部分是主人公的困惑，主人公由于无知表现出对自我和对黑人社会状况的困惑，这些困惑也就成了他成长的动力。第2部分是主人公在1些正面或反面的.人物的影响下的成长，通过他自己的1些亲身经历以及1些引路人的引导和帮助，主人公慢慢地走向成熟。第3部分是顿悟，通过他在医院以及托德的死的顿悟，他认识到了他自己以及所有黑人在白人社会中的不可见性并最终导致他生活在地下成为别人所看不见的人。本文的3个部分实际上就是主人公的1个成长全过程，通过这样1个过程他成功地由无知变得成熟。
