On Chinese-English Translation Strategies of Puns
Abstract
Pun, as a common rhetoric device, can enrich language expressions, and enforce the effect of language. In everyday life, it is widely used in communication and literature works. The double meanings of a pun make it difficult to be translated from Chinese to English. But it doesn’t mean that puns are not translatable.This thesis studies the proper strategies such as alternative puns, literal translation, literal translation with annotation, paraphrase and so on, for the translation of Chinese puns into English, based on semantics and culture. By means of these strategies, both the implications and the style of a pun can be presented in its translation completely or partly.

摘 要
双关作为1种常用的修辞手法，具有丰富语言表达、强化语言效果的'功能，在日常生活、语言交际、文学作品中被广泛运用。其蕴涵的双重含义使它成为汉英翻译中的1个难点，但双关语并非不可译。本文以语义和文化为切入点，讨论了双关语适当的翻译策略。如：双关替代法、直译法、直译加注法和意译法等。通过这些方法使双关语的内涵和语体色彩在译文中得到最大的保留。
